Το 1834 η Αθήνα ανακηρύχθηκε πρωτεύουσα της Ελλάδας, με διάταγμα της Αντιβασιλείας, και ένα χρόνο μετά έγιναν οι πρώτες δημοτικές εκλογές, οι οποίες ανέδειξαν δήμαρχο τον Ανάργυρο Πετράκη.
